Stacking Resistance Genes in Multiparental Interspecific Potato Hybrids to Anticipate Late Blight Outbreaks

Stacking (pyramiding) several resistance genes of diverse race specificity in one and the same plant by hybridization provides for high durable to major diseases, such as potato late blight (LB), especially when breeders combine highly efficient broad-spectrum that are novel intruding pathogens. Our collection hybrids manifesting long-lasting LB comprises, a whole, germplasm 26 or 22 Solanum species (as treated Bukasov Hawkes, respectively), with up 8–9 listed pedigree an individual hybrid. This was screened markers ten race-specific Phytophthora infestans (Rpi genes) initially identified S. demissum (R1, R2, R3a, R3b, R8), bulbocastanum/S. stoloniferum (Rpi-blb1/ Rpi-sto1, Rpi-blb2, Rpi-blb3) venturii (Rpi-vnt1). The comprised four-six Rpi per plant, number significantly related resistance. Nevertheless, considerable portion apparently depended on presently insufficiently characterized genes. Bred from these multiparental hybrids, advanced lines stacks broad-specificity will help anticipate outbreaks caused rapid pathogen evolution arrival new strains.
